Garment District Manufacturing Tour September 8th 2022

Nothing helps you learn faster than hands-on experience. That’s why V.Mora is hosting a hands-on Garment District Manufacturing Tour on Sept. 8 at 10:00 am. This “Can’t Miss” tour will give you the most valuable business information to drive your line’s success.

The New York City Garment District Field Trip was so successful we’re going to do another  tour with a few new vendors but with the same strategic goals. All designers need to know the insider information we’ll reveal about domestic manufacturing. You can only understand when you witness it in person. When you tour the legendary factories, and discuss what is expected of you and what your requirements are with the vendors, you will gain a much deeper knowledge of the advantages of producing domestically. It can not only make you a smarter designer, it will advance your business knowledge to a much higher level.

Return to “Made in America”

It used to be that the New York City Garment District was the place to be if you were a designer of a fashion line in America. It was the source of 90% of the garments sold in the USA. Recently, offshore production has proliferated and reduced the number of garments produced in the NYC Garment District to only 4-6%. This legendary manufacturing capital may have lost its volume, but it still owns the fabulous luster that makes it so legendary.

If you happen to be launching a fashion line, NYC is often the best and most cost effective option to produce because of the deep and sophisticated experience of the seasoned vendors and factory workers. New York still rules as the fashion capital and if you have an “IN”, it can be the answer to launching the fashion line of your dreams.

There are many reasons it makes sense to manufacture in the USA. You get the luxury of faster lead times, clear communication, and clothing that is made by workers with better conditions than probably anywhere else in the world. This can be a very important, intangible benefit to your customers.

The sustainability movement that is growing in this nation is compelling customers to seek out garments that are produced ethically and environmentally. They actively look for fashions that are made in America and feel better when they buy them. This movement is driving many manufacturers to produce in America. The NYC Garment District remains the first place to look when you are sourcing your line.

Myths of Producing Offshore

The idea of manufacturing offshore has become the “gold standard” for keeping unit costs low and your production runs inexpensive. Unless you are a major manufacturer ordering enormous volume; however,  this idea often turns out to be a costly mistake. Overseas factories are used to servicing large manufacturers, and your initial clothing line launch is competing with the major players for their attention.

They do not often agree to produce smaller runs. That means you need to make larger orders which may bring down your cost per unit; however, the larger order can require much higher upfront investment. Investing too much of your start-up investment in inventory can seriously reduce your ability to execute the critical marketing strategies that will generate actual buyers for your launch. Too many designers make the mistake of over-ordering inventory and under-budgeting the marketing plan necessary to sell it. When you cannot afford to excite consumers about your fashions, it can result in the early failure of your line.

Know your options in the NYC Garment District

The NYC Garment District is not always the right option, but many times it is the one that gives you the most flexibility to succeed. As a designer planning your new launch, you owe it to yourself to know and understand this option. There are fantastic factories to see here in the Garment District and when you actually walk through them and talk to the people, you will understand the advantages they can give you.  Companies like Fluer Du Mal and Alexander Wang still produce their samples in the NYC Garment District. These domestic vendors are much easier to communicate with and the samples they produce can be used for either domestic production or manufacturing overseas.

Garment District Manufacturing Tour

Our July NYC Garment District field trip was so successful and so informative that many of our designers asked us to host another. There is nothing like the hands-on experience of actually going to the factories and witnessing the magic right before your eyes.

The most valuable information you will learn is when you listen to the manufacturers themselves. They’ll tell you what they expect from you so that your line can come alive. We have put together a whole new list of some of the most fabulous vendors. We have vetted and worked with every supplier we are going to visit.

If you are planning on launching a fashion line and operating a successful fashion business, you owe it to yourself to expose yourself to this priceless information first hand. Join us on September 8, from 10:00 am until 2:30 pm.  Click Here for Tickets to our Garment District Manufacturing Tour.
