Successful Fashion Entrepreneurs - Just Like You: Bergy Bag by Heather Dziedzic
They say riches are in the niches, and for a fashion entrepreneur finding your niche and defining your brand is an essential start to a successful launch. The founder of Bergy Bag solved an everyday problem with a fashion forward make-up bag and created a very successful new fashion line.
Everyday problems can become promising opportunities when you can solve them successfully. Heather Dziedzic lives in Arizona. She grew very weary of finding melted lipsticks, baked expensive cosmetics, and exploding serums ruined in her cosmetic bag. The situation was annoying and expensive. She was vexed with a problem shared by millions of women who live in hotter climates. Heather got fed up with it and she created a fashionable “cooling” cosmetic bag that protects toiletries, cosmetics, sunscreen, and anything that can melt from the scorching heat.
The result was: Bergy Bag. Bergy Bag is a fashionable clutch made of scratch and water resistant leather, unique insulation, and even its own custom designed freezer pack that slips into a specially tailored pocket. It keeps cosmetics cool and fresh all day long. The stylish clutch is great on the hottest days, and is also a perfect accessory for evenings out.
Bergy Bag Beginning:
Like many innovative designers, Heather had a great brainstorm for a very useful product; however, she had no experience at all with fashion designing, manufacturing, and marketing. She never let that stop her. Heather knew she had to translate what was in her head into a sellable product. She became a self-driven student of the fashion industry. Through active networking, intense research, and industry coaching, she translated her concept into the Bergy Bag that’s now so popular. Bergy Bag launched in 2019 and began selling right away. It was unique and filled a need that had not been addressed..
“Push your product along every day.”, she says was her most valuable piece of advice. The second piece of advice she followed was wisdom from a manager she had at a software marketing company. “Before you do everything else that you have to do in a day, do the things that are going to get you paid.”
She maintained her “can do” focus, and started her new venture in the fashion industry. In the early days of her start-up, her most important mission was to create a bag that did everything it needed to do.
Designing the Bergy Bag:
Heather and a cryogenics engineer finally settled on a patent-pending design for her Bergy Bag. It took her three years of researching, designing, and developing her idea. The original Bergy Bag is a stylish 7” by 5.5” inch bag with a D ring on one side. It fits into a purse, doubles as a fashionable clutch to be carried by itself, or hooks onto a backpack, diaper bag, or gym bag. Inside the bag, there is a pocket for the custom made freezer pack that’s about the size of a hotel room key. Another V.I.P. sleeve behind that pocket is designed to hold your cell phone, and prevent it from overheating. Your make-up, toiletries, wallet, and other needs go into the main compartment.
The luxe, fashion forward exterior of the bag is designed with scratch and water resistant, Saffiano leather. There is also a rust-resistant zipper that stays functional if there is condensation from the ice pack.
The name Bergy Bag comes from the term, Bergy Bit, used to describe a chunk of ice broken off an ice-berg. Heather plans to expand the Bergy Bag line in the future. New products to look for are different sizes and shapes, various colors, and accessories.
Business model:
Heather has adopted a hybrid business model. She sells her Bergy Bag in select boutiques and online on her eCommerce website at: www.bergybag.com. In order to minimize start-up costs and control inventory expense, she only offers three different Bergy Bags at this time. You can choose from black with a white zipper, white with a yellow zipper, or pink with a red zipper.
All the bags sell for $130, and come with the proprietary freezer pack that fits in a special pocket inside the bag. The price is very reasonable when you consider that the average woman in the U.S. spends nearly $1,400 on make-up annually and just under $3,000 on skincare products. Having a stylish bag that can protect them from the sun and intense heat, can be a smart investment.
To drive traffic to her site, Heather maintains an active presence on Instagram and Facebook, and hosts several “How To” instructional videos on YouTube. By creating a community of followers who experience the same sort of cosmetic-melting heat, she has created an eager target market for her bags and her new products coming in the future.
The Future for Bergy Bag:
After the successful launch of her original Bergy Bag, Heather is looking forward to growing and scaling the Bergy Bag business. Her first focus is creating a larger target audience and more brand awareness. She plans to become more active on social media and allow her community of followers to grow. She is also developing additional colors, sizes, shapes, and accessories that she plans to market online and in her select family of retail boutiques.
Heather had a specific problem. The heat kept melting her expensive cosmetics and toiletries. She creatively identified this everyday nuisance that many women experience, and designed a fashionable solution for it. That simple problem recognition launched her on a journey to create an exciting fashion success story.
