Branding Series - Why Perfecting your Brand & Product will Lead you to Success

How can perfectionism lead you to success? In this blog, I will go over why an aspiration for perfectionism with your brand and product can lead your business to success.

Art has many mediums, but all mediums all require one thing…editing. Take Apple for example, while there are several different phone companies, and several different models of phones available for purchase within each company, the leading phone designer in the USA is Apple. Why? Well, back in 2007 Apple created their first phone, the iPhone. It was an entirely different phone that functioned differently. Rather than relying on that one introductory model; however,  they improved their product year after year.

You may want to start with a product brainstorm or with a Brand Identity brainstorm first, but the key process is to brainstorm, edit, then execute. During this process you want feedback from people you know as well as what you think your target demographic is. Receiving feedback and using it as a driver early on is what can set you up for a successful launch. This could be feedback on anything from logo design to the website to the product and packaging. Feedback can help you understand what a customer is thinking and what they want. One way to get product feedback is by conducting wear tests or product tests which allows a specific person or group to try out the product and give feedback regarding the features, benefits, and drawbacks of your product.

By the time of launch, your product and brand should be fluid and in sync so that the customer experience is the same throughout. If they are not in sync you may need to adjust components of the product or the components of the brand. Apple’s brand always had a sleek and modern aesthetic so when they released the iPhone, they aimed to carry that same aesthetic and branding throughout. There is only so much you can do pre launch, there comes a time where you need to finish all of your edits and take the leap and launch.

Launching is not the final step. When it comes to perfecting a brand and product the post launch feedback is extremely valuable. There will be many forms of feedback, but if you notice trends in the freeback, perhaps a feature people love or something they dislike, keep notes for the future. Those trends will help guide you, your brand and your product’s evolution. When the time is right you can implement small or big improvements depending on how they serve the brand. Unless your brand identity has changed, you always want to remain true to your Brand’s core values and mission. Any improvements to the product should be in sync with your brand identity.

There is a reason why Apple is the leading phone maker, they don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Creating something completely new to the world is not only a lot of pressure but difficult to execute, because of lack of feedback. For example, prior to the iPhone, touch screen phones were already available as well as applications. What Apple did was to integrate those components using their own take, that being their IOS system and design aesthetic. They took elements that were already out there in previous selling products and designed them into their own version of their phone. As a designer, you want to have your own spin to your product and brand.
